Bhai Dooj 2026 is the final festival of the five-day Diwali celebrations, and this year, Bhai Dooj will be celebrated on Wednesday, 11 November. Much like Raksha Bandhan, it is rooted in the loving bond between brothers and sisters. On this day, sisters apply a tilak on their brothers' foreheads and share sweets, and the two spend some quality time together.

Also known as Bhaiya Dooj or Yama Dwitiya, the festival has a rich tradition behind it. In this guide, we will cover the Bhai Dooj tilak muhurat, puja vidhi, katha and astrological importance, so you can celebrate the day the traditional way.

When Is Bhai Dooj in 2026?

Why 11 November and not 10?

In Kartik 2026, Shukla Dwitiya tithi begins on the afternoon of 10th November, but it is fully present during the afternoon muhurat on 11 November.  As per Uday tithi, Bhai Dooj will be celebrated on 11 November 2026. However, some families will celebrate Bhai Dooj on 10 November if they don’t consider Uday Tithi. Muhurat timings also change by city. If the afternoon is difficult for your family, many traditions allow the tilak in the morning while Dwitiya is still on.

Bhai Dooj Katha

According to a well-known Puranic story, Yama, the god of death, had not visited his sister Yamuna for a long time. One day, on Kartik Shukla Dwitiya, he finally went to see her. Sister Yamuna welcomed her brother with tilak, garland and a warm meal. Pleased by her love, Yama gave her a boon: brothers who receive a tilak from their sisters on this day will be protected. This is the reason why we offer diya in the south direction (the direction of Yama), and call Bhai Dooj as Yama Dwitya.

Astrological Importance of Bhai Dooj

  • Dwitiya in Shukla Paksha. Shukla Paksha is the growing phase of the Moon, traditionally linked with growth and new beginnings.

  • Link with Yama. Yama is associated with life span, so sisters traditionally pray for their brothers' long and healthy lives.

  • Chitragupta Jayanti. The same day is observed as Chitragupta Jayanti. Chitragupta is traditionally believed to record every person's actions.

  • Siblings in the kundli. In Jyotish, the 3rd house is linked with younger siblings and the 11th with elder siblings. Mars is considered the karaka of brothers. These are read along with the whole chart, as themes, not verdicts.

  • Send the tilak thali, sweets and a gift by courier or online.

  • Pray for him at home during the muhurat.

How Is Bhai Dooj Celebrated Across India?

  • North India (Delhi, Uttar Pradesh): Bhai Dooj, with roli and akshat tilak.

  • Maharashtra (Mumbai, Pune): Bhau Beej, with sweets like kheerni poori or busundi poori.

  • West Bengal (Kolkata): Bhai Phota, where sandalwood paste and kajal are used for the tilak.

  • Gujarat: Bhai Bij, traditional dish Undhiyu is the main highlight of this festival.

How is Bhai Dooj different from Raksha Bandhan?

Both festivals celebrate the bond between brothers and sisters, and their rituals look quite similar. But there are a few clear differences.

Bhai Dooj

Raksha Bandhan

When it is celebrated

Kartik Shukla Dwitiya, right after Diwali (October–November)

Shravan Purnima (usually July–August)

Main ritual

Sisters apply a tilak on the brother's forehead

Sisters tie a rakhi on the brother's wrist

Brother's promise

Brothers vow of lifelong presence

Brothers vow to protect their sisters lifelong

Linked story

Yama and Yamuna, which is why it is also called Yama Dwitiya

Its own traditional stories

Focus

Brother's long life and well-being

Protection and the sacred thread of love

In short, Raksha Bandhan is about the rakhi, while Bhai Dooj is about the tilak. The feeling behind both festivals is the same: love, care and a promise to stand by each other.

Can Someone Without a Brother Celebrate Bhai Dooj?

Yes. In some regions, such as Haryana and Maharashtra, sisters without brothers worship the Moon on Bhai Dooj. Many families also celebrate this festival with cousins, close male relatives or friends who feel like family, and exchange sweets along with good wishes. The last two are modern practices, but the spirit of the day stays the same.

Conclusion

This year, Bhai Dooj 2026 will be celebrated on 11 November. It is a simple, bond-building and relationship-strengthening festival between brothers and sisters. Bhai Dooj marks the end of Diwali festivities. The astrology behind the day adds depth, but the time you spend together matters most.
