In Vedic astrology, your soul purpose is read from four places in your birth chart: your Atmakaraka (the planet with the highest degree), the Rahu–Ketu axis, the 9th house of dharma and the Sun, the natural significator of the soul (atma). Together they show what your soul wants to learn, the direction it is growing in and the skills it already brings from the past.
This guide explains each of them in simple words and how to find them in your own kundli.
1. Atmakaraka: The Soul’s Main Desire
In Jaimini astrology, the planet that has travelled furthest within its sign — the highest degree, ignoring the sign itself — is your Atmakaraka, the “significator of the soul”. It shows the theme your soul most wants to work on in this life.
Atmakaraka | Soul theme |
|---|---|
Sun | Leadership, self-respect and learning to shine without ego |
Moon | Caring for others, emotional wisdom and inner peace |
Mars | Courage, protection and using energy with discipline |
Mercury | Learning, communication, business and clear thinking |
Jupiter | Wisdom, teaching, guidance and faith |
Venus | Love, beauty, art and balanced relationships |
Saturn | Service, patience, responsibility and justice |
Some astrologers also count Rahu (measured in reverse) as an eighth karaka. The sign your Atmakaraka occupies in the Navamsa (D9) chart — called the Karakamsha — adds detail about how this purpose shows up. You can see your D9 chart with the free Lagna Navamsa (D9) calculator.
2. Rahu and Ketu: Where You Are Going and Where You Come From
Rahu and Ketu are always opposite each other. Ketu shows talents and lessons your soul already carries from past lives — areas that feel natural but no longer satisfy. Rahu shows the unfamiliar direction your soul is meant to grow towards in this life, often with strong desire and some confusion.
The houses they occupy matter most. For example, Ketu in the 4th house and Rahu in the 10th often points to a soul moving from private, family-centred life towards public work and career.
3. The 9th House and the Dharma Trikona
The 9th house is the house of dharma — higher purpose, beliefs, teachers and luck. Together with the 1st house (self) and 5th house (creativity, past-life merit) it forms the dharma trikona, the triangle of purpose. Strong planets here, or a strong 9th lord, show a life guided by meaning and values.
4. The Sun: Your Soul’s Light
The Sun is the natural karaka of the atma. Its sign and house show where you naturally seek recognition and how your soul expresses itself. A well-placed Sun gives confidence in your path; an afflicted Sun shows that self-belief is part of the lesson.
