Long ago, the Devas (gods) and Asuras (demons) fought a fierce war that lasted twelve years. The Asuras were gaining the upper hand. Facing severe torment at the hands of the Asuras, Indra, the king of the gods, sought guidance from Guru Brihaspati, the mentor of the Devas. Indra requested his help to protect the Gods.
On the morning of Shravana Purnima, the Raksha Vidhan, a sacred ritual for protection, was performed. Guru Brihaspati recited the powerful mantra during the process. Indra and his wife joined him in chanting the mantra. Indrani then had the Raksha Sutra authenticated by all the Brahmins and Purohits and tied it on Indra’s right hand. With the protection of this sacred Sutra, Indra was able to defeat the Asuras and restore peace.

The celebration of the festival starts as soon as the sun rises.
Prior to the festival, sisters buy the rakhi for their brothers. In the morning of Raksha Bandhan, they prepare traditional foods and sweets.
Once the early bath is complete, the puja and other rituals take place (In that puja, it is customary to tie rakhi to Shri Ganesha first).
An arti is prepared with a diya, tilak, sweets, and a rakhi.
The sister does the arti of her brother, applies the tilak, ties the rakhi, and makes him eat sweet with her own hand.
At the end, the brother has to offer a gift to her sister.
After tying the rakhi, the raksha mantra has to be uttered.

Before tying, the Potli can be placed on a Kalash in a clean corner of the house and properly worshiped to improve its protective power.
