पौराणिक कथा के अनुसार, मकर संक्रांति के दिन भगवान विष्णु ने पृथ्वी लोक पर असुरों का संहार कर उनके सिरों को काटकर मंदरा पर्वत पर फेंका था। लिहाजा भगवान की जीत को मकर संक्रांति के रूप में मनाया जाने लगा। मकर संक्रांति के दिन से ही ऋतु परिवर्तन होने लगता है। इस दिन से शरद ऋतु का प्रभाव कम होने लगता है और बसंत का आगमन हो जाता है। इसके बाद दिन लंबे और रात छोटी होने लगती है। धार्मिक मान्यताओं के अनुसार मकर संक्रांति के दिन सूर्यदेव अपने पुत्र शनिदेव के घर जाते हैं। पिता माना जाता है इससे पुत्र के बीच प्रेम बढ़ता है। ऐसे में भगवान सूर्य और शनि की अराधना शुभ फलदायी होती है। मान्यता है कि मकर संक्रांति के दिन इनमें से किसी एक मंत्र के जाप से भक्तों में तेज और ओज की वृद्धि होती है। उन पर भगवान सूर्य की कृपा होती है और सूर्य देव का आशीर्वाद प्राप्त होता है।

मकर संक्रांति के दिन प्रातः काल शुभ मुहूर्त में स्नान आदि कर लें। यदि स्नान करने वाले पानी में काला तिल, थोड़ा सा गुड़ और गंगाजल मिला लें तो उत्तम होगा। स्नान के बाद साफ-सुथरा वस्त्र धारण कर तांबे के लोटे में जल लें। इसमें काला तिल, गुड़, लाल चंदन, लाल पुष्प, अक्षत् आदि मिला कर सूर्य को अर्पित करते हुए अर्घ्य दें और अर्घ्य देते समय सूर्य मंत्र का जाप करें।

थाई पोंगल/पोंगल
तमिलनाडु में मनाया जाने वाला थाई पोंगल, भगवान इंद्र को श्रद्धांजलि देने के लिए चार दिनों के उत्सव के रुप में मनाया जाता है। यह दिन भगवान इंद्र को भरपूर बारिश के लिए आभार मानने का एक माध्यम है। इसलिए उपजाऊ भूमि और अच्छी उपज की कामना स्वरुप यह मनाई जाती हैं।
थाई पोंगल के दूसरे दिन, ताजा पका हुआ चावल दूध में उबाला जाता है और इसे भगवान सूर्य को प्रसाद स्वरुप अर्पित किया जाता है। तीसरे दिन, मट्टू पोंगल ‘बसवा’- भगवान शिव के बैल को घंटियों, फूलों की माला, और पेंट के साथ सजाकर पूजन किया जाता है। पोंगल के चौथे दिन, कन्नुम पोंगल मनाया जाता है जिसमें घर की सभी महिलाएँ एक साथ विभिन्न प्रकार के धार्मिक अनुष्ठान करती हैं।

भोगली या माघ बिहू
भोगली या माघ बिहू असम का एक सप्ताह लंबा फसल त्यौहार है। यह पर्व माह के 29 वें दिन से शुरू होता है, जो 13 जनवरी को पड़ता है और लगभग एक सप्ताह तक चलता है। इस त्यौहार पर लोग हरे बांस और घास के साथ बनी विशेष संरचना “मेजी” (एक प्रकार की अलाव) का निर्माण करते हैं और जलाते हैं।
