तुलसी का पौधा हिन्दू धर्म में बेहद पवित्र माना जाता है, इसे तुलसी माँ कहकर संबोधित किया जाता है। हर किसी के आंगन में तुलसी का पौधा आपको लगा हुआ मिल जाएगा। यह कई औषधीय गुणों से भरपूर होता है इसलिए इसे आयुर्वेद में भी बहुत आवश्यक औषधि माना जाता है। भारतीय पुरातन शास्त्रों में भी तुलसी के पौधे की खासियत और उसके आध्यात्मिक कारणों का प्रमाण मिलता है। तुलसी के पौधे को आँगन में लगाने मात्र से ही आसपास का वातावरण शुद्ध और सकारात्‍मक हो जाता है। यह कई बीमारियों की दवा है जिसका ऋषि-मुनि और वैद्यों ने सदियों से उपयोग किया है। आमतौर पर हमें कफ और सर्दी ज़ुकाम की समस्या के लिए तुलसी का काढ़ा, तुलसी की चाय या तुलसी के तेल जैसी दवाएं ही सूझती है।

सूर्यग्रहण के अवसर पर भारतीय हिन्दू संस्कृति के अनुसार हमारे ऋषि मुनियों द्वारा यह कहा गया है कि ग्रहण के वक्त भोजन करना,पानी पीना,स्नान करना या शुभ काम करना अनिवार्य रूप से मना किया गया है। पानी के पात्रों और किसी भी द्रव्य को शुद्ध रखने के लिए उनमें तुलसी के पत्ते डाल दिये जाते हैं। ऐसी मान्यता है कि ग्रहण के समय भोजन और पानी में विषैले तत्व प्रभावी हो जाते हैं जो शरीर के लिए कई रोग का कारण बनते है इसलिए ग्रहण ख़त्म होने के बाद भोजन और पानी को नष्ट कर दिया जाता है और नया भोजन बनाया जाता है और शुद्ध पानी पात्रों में भरा जाता है। ग्रहण ख़त्म होने के बाद स्नान करने की परंपरा है ताकि ग्रहण के कारण प्रभावी कीटाणु ख़त्म हो जाएं। इस दिन गर्भवती स्त्री को ग्रहण देखने से सख़्त मनाही है और इसके पेट में तुलसी का लेप लगाया जाता है ताकि राहु की कुदृष्टि से बचा जा सके। ग्रहण के समय भगवान की आराधना की जाती है, मंत्र जप किये जाते हैं, भजन कीर्तन किया जाता है।
